[EXP 1 Stair Concept Model] Assessment pt 1

Part 1: The stair concept model

STAIRY NIGHT

~ ABOVE-GROUND TO SHOWROOM

The following set of stairs, designed for client Mountains & Moons, connects the above-ground space to the showroom, and seeks to reflect the dignified nature of the delicacy of their products. Leading to an intimate space, the selection of the spiral structure for the staircase contributes to the diaphanous and ethereal ambience created as the high, dacron ceiling invites subtle sunlight to gently embrace the workspace. The centre of the spiral naturally forms a vertical line which aligns to an intentionally positioned, concentrated beam of sun to immerse the client as they walk up towards the above-ground, instigating the elevation of senses as the stairs allude to an escape from reality. The transparency of the glass stairs further extends this sunlight down to the showroom, which travels down the elongation of railings, parallel to the pendants of the client's jewellery.

~ BELOW-GROUND TO SHOWROOM

Designed for client Trent Jansen, the staircase below translates his ability to construct organic compositions to reflect fluidity in movement. Individual stairs are impressed with waves carved on the side, revealing a fluctuating motion when observed in conjunction. The amalgamation of wood and steel to fashion the stairway parallels the material framework primarily used by the client, as the heavier and industrial elements provides tone and depth to the workspace.
